On 27th December 2019 in our department; Department of English we have a workshop on Cultural studies. The resources person of this workshop is Kalyani Vallath. On our sir's ( Dr. Dilip Barad ) request she decided to come to give us some knowledge of Cultural studies. The session began around 8: 30 and we have full day workshop there.
She her talk with what is cultural Studies. Here I will write about what I understand about the cultural Studies from Mam's lecture.
What I understand about Cultural Studies :
The very first thing I understand from Cultural Studies is that it is Interdisciplinary Studies. When we look at Cultural Studies that time every practical life aspect come in to it. That are from the economic to politics to history to building a relationship. The very important thing about Cultural Studies is that it makes us tolerant.
When we Study power politics we realized that power doesn't play it's role in democracy or in country but it also play it's role in the individual life. Some time in from of relationship , sometime in form of gender, sometime in form of class.
For Arnold Cultural Studies is about study of perfection. But in real life Cultural Studies play vital role in imperfections of life. It also teaches us that when we talk about Cultural Studies that we must look things without prejudice.
How we explain Cultural Studies to layman :
If we want to talk with layman we can start talking about power politics with them. Because this thing may Connect them more. Because they are many time suffer because of people in power want listen them. We can tell them how they can overpower that powerful people because of there right about various things and also because they can be in majority of they come together. But there majority only works when they come to Know about their right and also when they can understand that how they can use their right in proper way. Because if they don't know about how to use their right in proper way there majority won't work.
Once they understand this thing we can connect them with the Marxist idea of materialism and class conflict also. And letter on we can explain them about gender rights also. So by this way we can connect them with Cultural Studies.
How I explain Cultural Studies in interview :
If I asked in interview about the very first things I talked with them is that how Cultural Studies makes us tolerant. Which Studies are there in Cultural Studies Which allow us to look at things in broader way. Though it makes us leftist how it is useful in practical way.
The catchy example :
There are so many catchy example in the season. But the one which takes place in my mind and I will never forget is her own example about gender role. She say that when she once had a fight with her neighbor. And how her neighbor think about her when she told her husband that " you stay out of my fight". Her neighbor say her that if you treat her husband like this then how you can be good wife. And whole fight take it turn in other topic. This example she gave when she was talking about playing a role. She said that because she doesn't take help of her husband then she doesn't play ideal role of gender. And I feel connected with her talk about the loud voice. She said that in our society for girls it is important to talk in slowly. If a girl talk louder it doesn't judge as good thing. I found it connected because I also have loud voice and my mother always tell me to speak in slow. Because of my personal experience about voice I found it more catchy then any other example.
