The postmaster is well-known Short story written by Rabindranath Tagore.
The maine character of the story is Ratan and postmaster. The story take place in Ulapur. The postmaster came here form Calcutta. He was well educated but people from Ulapur are not that educated. So he doesn't like to spend his time with that villagers so he desied to don't have much friend in village.
To deal with his loneliness he started writing poetry. Like that is the only way to express his sorrow. He doesn't have much money to spend money he cook for himself and there was a poor girl Ratan who helped him to do other household work.
They slowly started talking about their families. Postmaster used to talk about his family in Calcutta. And how much he misses his mother and sister. Once he desied to teach Ratan how to read and write. But after some time he fall I'll. Ratan used to take care of him.
But postmaster wasn't able to recover. So finally he desied to go back. He apealy for the transfer but could not get, so he quit the job.
When he was returning at that time Ratan thought that he will take her with him. But post Master didn't do so. When he was leaving at that time he offer Ratan some some money but she refused. Ay the time of leaving Postmaster think that he should take Ratan with him but then say that life is full of separation so what's the point? By thinking that he went. Ratan was still waiting and thought that postmaster will come and take her.
